Hey this is not a US musician but kind of citizen of the world musician who is worth hearing, I highly reccommend Rachid Taha's new album "Tekitoi" he has a song on there called "Safi" that is an amazing mix of north african beat, hip hop and hard rock, and hey it is still very sexy and funny. It's lusty hard rock, not weeney or childish or super agro metal.

Anyways the lyrics in Arabic are awesome, with him wailing against the lack of democracy in Algeria; many of his criticisms ironically could well be applied to the US of A given the authoritarian capitalist dystopia that GW Bush is trying to push us into. The chorus, that follows a list of where Algerian society is authoritarian is "ana gelb-i safi, nabghi el-habb bi-z-zahwani" "as for me my heart is pure I want to love joyously!" That is all sung over some the aforementioned sexy grungy rock.

For what it is worth. A bit of Arabic Billy Bragg spirit is surely welcome no?

Well I was going to say Black '47, but they've already been mentioned. I used to love The Beautiful South, but I have not heard any of their new stuff in many years.

The "Levellers" from England, Brighton to be exact, are way out to the left and damn fine musicians on top of that!

Christy Moore, from Ireland, has always managed a good mixture of politics, history, humor and social issues and he puts on great live shows.

old public enemy is great, too. my favorites are "ain't nuttin buttersong", which is a diss on patriotism, and my absolute favorite
"hitler day", which is about all the fucked-up holidays we celebrate, especially columbus day.

for non-US bands, there's the manic street preachers - their new album is great. they do some of my favorite political songs, like "if you tolerate this then your children will be next" about the spanish civil war, "freedom of speech won't feed my children", "let robeson sing", and "the love of richard nixon".

I was thinking about the times we have here in the US and how we need some musicians on the left, like Billy, to make some sense of it all. So.. what other bands or musicians, with Billy-esque politics do you like. All the better if they are from the US.

I'm going to throw in two.

Black 47- from NYC, mixing irish and rock music with a big dose of history and politics. I even made a tribe for them cause I couldnt' find one. http://black47.tribe.net

And
The Beautiful South. from the UKI haven't bought a recent CD but the earlier stuff had all sorts of subtle political overtones.
